WHAT IS YOGA?

The practice of yoga originated in ancient India around 5,000 years ago and has been adapted in many countries in a variety of ways.

There are 8 limbs (disciplines) of Yoga which are still practiced today by many. When you attend my class the focus is on asana (poses) and pranayama (breath).  It is considered to be a form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing.

Most studies suggest yoga is a safe and effective way to increase physical activity, strength, flexibility and balance.

"There is some evidence that regular yoga practice is beneficial for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains – including lower back pain – depression and stress" Quoted from NHS website.

My personal Yoga Journey/ benefits

Sometimes life throws a lot at you and you find you have a lot to juggle.   You may not even realise how stressed you are until you body gives you a sign.

Stress can manifest in several ways: weight gain, weight loss, skin issues, chronic and invasive health issues as well as mental health issues and depression.

For me, it lead to weight gain, extreme eczema, anxiety and sleep problems.  My body was not happy with me and it let me know!

My symptoms were managed medically for a while, but the source of my symptoms could not be determined.

I began to manage my physical symptoms firstly, by changing my diet and reducing my stress triggers.  This freed up some time for me to put myself first.  So I increased my physical activity through running and HIIT.  However, this lead to injuries!  I think 30 years of high intensity workouts was taking it's toll.  I decided to increase my pilates and yoga sessions.

Then one day, I discovered the connection between the breath and movement of yoga and was amazed at my transformation.  The benefits for me were:

better sleep

more energy

weight management

lower stress levels

less aches and pains in joints and muscles

clearer skin

greater self esteem

There is something special about taking time out for yourself, to be in the present moment and just breathe and now that I teach yoga, I have witnessed some amazing transformations in some of my students.

what to expect

Although I cannot control your wifi connection or space restrictions, when you practice live streamed yoga, as your instructor, I will be interacting with you and checking that you are practising safely. You are not following along blindly.

Once I know your yoga history, goals and what you like I will structure the class so everyone attending gets some benefit.

My online yoga classes have a community feel.  We are there to encourage each other and always have a few minutes beforehand for a chat.

You can join in when you want, or switch the camera off if you want to have a quiet/ more personal practice.  There is no judgment or expectations.

This is your time to be in the present moment, forget any stresses or worries for a short time while improving your fitness.  So roll out the mat and let your journey begin..
